A guide to hybrid berries

Add a different element to your fruit garden this year with these amazing edibles

TAYBERRY

This fruit is a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry and is red in colour but longer in size. The harvests work well in jams due to their sweet taste, but they can also be enjoyed straight from the plant.

LOGANBERRY

This raspberry and blackberry cross should be picked when the yields turn red. Cooking the berries is a great way to make use of their fantastic flavour, but they can be consumed fresh.

Jobs in the fruit garden

Now that the clocks have gone back an hour, gardeners’ thoughts turn to preparing their plots for winter. There are plenty of tasks to be getting on with in November to ensure that your fruit garden remains productive.

• It is the perfect time to plant currant bushes whilst they are still dormant this season.

• Prune your pear and apple trees between now (once the leaves have dropped) and February – don’t attempt this with plum trees until mid-Summer, as they will be at risk of silver leaf fungus.

• Check the fruits you have in storage, and remove any that show signs of disease or rotting.

• Tidy up your strawberry plants by removing dead leaves and any decaying matter.
