Description

Believed raised at Hanwell, near Banbury, Oxfordshire. First recorded 1820.

A large culinary apple with strong acidity, as suggested by its name.

It was grown commercially in the West Midlands until replaced by Bramley in the 1930’s.

Cooks to a fruity, sharp, puree. Vigorous, spreading tree.
