The Perfect Pear

Pears from your own garden are hard to beat. What makes them even better is the fact that the trees are extremely simple to care for and just require some basic yearly pruning to offer up bumper harvests of delicious fruits. You will need a sheltered and sunny space that offers protection from frost and wind. Cordon or espalier trees trained against a wall or fence are a good option for unsheltered gardens.  Pears should be picked just before they are fully ripe. They continue to ripen in storage, so benefit from being kept for a week or two before consumption. Once you’ve tasted these sweet, succulent fruits from your own tree, you’ll never look back!

Considerations when choosing a tree

As well as providing fruit, your tree will be a decorative feature. It can provide shelter; can act as a screen and sound barrier; provide shade and attract wildlife.

Ensure the tree you choose is appropriate for your space and intended use.

Is the tree of your choice self fertile, or will it need a pollinating partner?

Remember that some varieties have ornamental value in their fruits and blossom.

Take care if the site is north facing or exposed – factors which will limit your choice.

Consider the size and research available rootstocks.

Plan for the eventual height and spread of your tree as it matures and reaches its full size.

Our dedicated team at Grow can answer all these questions and assist you in making the best choice to suit your needs and space.

Plant a fruiting hedge

Why not plant your own stretch of species-rich hedgerow to add colour and interest to your garden and delight the local wildlife? It’s certainly a much cheaper and more attractive way of creating a boundary than buying a fence or building a wall. Here are some tips.

• Use a Native hedge which includes hawthorn, dog rose, field maple, hazel, gelder rose, spindle and blackthorn.  Add in a crab apple , some blackcurrants, raspberries  and red currants.

• Fruit bushes can be planted at very close spacings in a hedge, but it’s still really important to avoid planting too densely.

• Trim your established hedge every other year to allow for flowers and fruiting.
